We were delighted to be asked to design a contemporary piece of furniture to accommodate audio visual equipment for our client’s home. Our brief was to design a low and sleek unit with understated detailing but also to have our signature splash of colour matched of course with hand-crafted quality.

Our client’s home, a Huf Haus was the perfect setting for us to begin. Huf's design philosophy holds many values that we at Made by 68º adhere to. They build exquisite homes each truly bespoke and in very limited numbers. Known for their sumptuous interiors and high-end features, using a limited palette of materials, we were keen to create something equally stunning.

The team at Made by immediately got to work. We presented our thinking by showing our client some initial visuals and sketches. At almost three metres in length, we wanted to disrupt the shape and break it up into three smaller pods. This allowed us not only to create interest, but to add our signature coloured elements which act to separate the cabinets.

The outer surface of the cabinets have been covered with a layer of graphite dyed oak veneer to match the internal joinery of the house. We wanted to pair an austere exterior and contrast it with a sumptuous and luxurious interior. The doors open to reveal sycamore lined internals, with rippled sycamore drawers and shelves. Featuring push to open and soft close mechanisms we eliminated the need for handles.

Quality is paramount, not least when it comes to the hardware. When interacting with the piece, it was important to convey a lightness of touch combined with a reassuring feel of solid engineering. We worked with Grass® Movement Systems UK and they supplied their new Kinvaro flap system which features damped opening and a soft close function. These are teamed with the company’s Tiomos hinges.

Our design aesthetic is always to create drama by the careful use of colour and texture. I think we succeeded in this project.
